Movie Review: Jurassic World

Let me start this by saying it is a good movie. It brought the magic of the first one back and gave it an entire new life. It's quite ironic that I would say I'm a big fan of dinosaurs despite my huge fear of reptiles. I just had to take a vacation leave just to watch this movie at its first day in the theater, that's how excited I was when I saw this movie. And it was also on the same day Dragon Ball Z Fukatsu no F was showing, so two big movies on one day made my one day vacation leave worth it.

The Good and the Bad

So what made the movie good? First of all, they opened the park! YES! FANTASTIC! I was already visualizing stuff on what might go wrong, which made me want to see it even more. It was the next Jurassic Park after a long time. It was 10 years in the making, so probably they were cooking up something new. And they did come up with something new, "hybrid dinosaurs". It was like the Jurassic Park: Chaos Effect toy line. The toy line was cancelled due to poor sales, Imagine every awesome dinosaur rolled into one, it reminds me of those bootleg 99 in 1 Famicom cartridges back in the day. So if you do the math, big ass super dino plus a park full of happy, plump and juicy patrons equals complete chaos. And when you put Star Lord (Chris Pratt) and Gwen Stacy (Bryce Dallas Howard) in the cast, you're sure it's gonna be a great movie.

What are the downsides of the movie? The only person from the first movie is Henry Wu who is played by B.D. Wong. He was one of the scientists in the first movie, but in this movie he was given a bigger role. But other than that there is nothing else. Only a statue of John Hammond and a book written by Ian Malcolm makes an appearance. Next is the "WOW" factor from the first movie is no longer there. Seeing Jurassic Park for the first time made my jaw drop. From the brilliant use of CGI to the physical effects, that movie still lives up to today's standards. The effects in Jurassic World were no doubt spectacular, but in the days of stop motion animation and rubber suits, Jurassic Park was a huge leap forward. Those are the only downsides I have on the movie. Not so bad right?

Fan Theory

There is a theory that Chris Pratt's character Owen is actually the volunteer boy in Dr. Alan Grant's dig site in the first movie. You know, the one that said that the raptor looks like a six foot turkey. It seems after Dr. Grant's "respect" lecture. He not only learned to respect the raptors, it seems he learned everything there was about them.

Viral Website

One of the best marketing strategies of this movie was making an actual website for the Jurassic World theme park. They made it as if it has existed since 2005. Not only that, they also put up a Masrani corporate website. Masrani is the company that acquired InGen, and it is also the company that made Jurassic World a reality. Since the role of Masrani is being played by Irrfan Khan a Bollywood superstar, it made me wonder why the dinosaurs never had a song and dance number in the middle of the movie.

This is not the first time viral websites were used though, Sony Pictures launched a viral website for Resident Evil: Retribution which featured the Umbrella Corporation.

Final Note

Jurassic World may not have the magic of the first one, but it's still a damn good movie. The cast is great and the effects are awesome. But to truly know if it is a good movie or not, you have to see it for yourself.
