Why is it called Appleseed XIII? Its actually a 13 episode OVA which is made by 13 different studios. The story retells the whole story of Masamune Shirow's manga. The studios will be using 3D models but will try to capture the essence of the original manga by making the characters look hand drawn, details of Masamune Shirow's art style was analyzed properly before it was converted into a 3D model. Each studio was assigned each episode based on their expertise.
The first episode of Appleseed XII was streamed for free in Nico Nico Douga on June 2, 2011. Each episode will run 22 minutes long.

The "theatrical remix version" of the first half of the story,
Appleseed XIII ~Yuigon~,
will open in theaters in Japan on June 13. During the theatrical
release, a limited edition of the first Blu-ray volume will be sold
exclusively at participating theaters, followed by a regular release on
July 6.
