Finally, something new other than vampires. Since the Twilight fever, a lot of shows about vampires started to spread like mushrooms. Zombies may not be new, but mixing it with a decent love story and a ton of fan service makes it something fun to watch. Survival horror is probably a new genre in a television series. And there are only a few shows that actually focused on the genre. One of them was from the United Kingdom under the name "Dead Set" which is set in the Big Brother house. It was released in October 7 of 2008 it only had 5 episodes.
High School of the Dead revolves around Fujimi High School set in present day Japan, when a pandemic breaks loose turning humans into zombies. The story follows Takashi Komuro, his classmates and their school nurse as they try to survive the outbreak. It's basically Biohazard: Outbreak the series. The show is extremely violent, just like Plants vs Zombies. Uh wait, that's not right. Just think of George Romero's movies and you'll know how violent the show is.
The animated version of the show is from Madhouse Studios, its the same studio that released Stitch!, Hello Kitty and Friends, Card Captor Sakura, Chobits, and Maple Story. Yipee! A very child friendly studio. Madhouse also released Ninja Scroll, Batman: Gotham Knight, The Animatrix, Death Note, Gungrave and other violent titles.
There is a unique mix of characters in the series, It's like watching a JRPG. There is a basic swordman, a medic, a long range specialist, a spear specialist, another sword specialist and a Tsundere (is that a character class now?). The action of the show is intense, and oh yeah, did I mention the fan service? Female zombies wear panties too.(urrgh) The show has 12 episodes in total. The opening music of the show is under the same title 「HIGH SCHOOL OF THE DEAD」 which is performed by Kishida Kyoudan & The Akeboshi Rockets.
The show is fun and the concept is new. I recommend this show to those people who want to see something new other than vampires.
